Adult Characters:

Adult roles must be played by adult actors.

Jean Shepherd: (Narrator) Male 40 – 55: Charismatic storyteller with a dynamic speaking voice who can draw the audience into the world of the play. Non-singing.

The Old Man: Male 30-45: High baritone or tenor to a high G. Good comic ability. He has a good heart but is buried under a rough exterior.

Mother: Female 28 – 40: Mezzo-soprano Low G to high Db. Good comic ability. She is more in charge than she would ever let anyone know. Warm but strong-willed, straightforward, no nonsense, likable, midwestern – a kind of every-mom.

Miss Shields: Female 25-40: Alto belter. She is Ralphie’s elementary school teacher. Great with comedy. Flexible voice who is comfortable singing both legit and contemporary Broadway. Good dancer with tap experience being a plus.

Santa: Male 30-60s: The Santa Claus at Higbee’s Department Store is ill-tempered, slightly inebriated and very unhappy with his job.

Ensemble: All Ages. Plenty of fun ensemble roles available. A strong sense of musical theatre comedy is needed.

Child Characters:

Ralphie: Can play age 10. A 5th grade boy who wants an Air Rifle for Christmas. He is bright, winsome, mischievous, cute. Not a smart-aleck or overly precocious, Ralphie’s imagination drives several scenes. An excellent singer and fluent reader with mega-watt stage presence. Ralphie’s dance is minimal.

Randy: Can play age 7. Ralphie’s younger brother, cute, cuddly, lovable and a little whiny. He looks up to his big brother, tries to keep up with him, and is young enough that he can be convinced to eat his dinner like a baby piggy! An excellent singer, a good dancer, a fluent reader and has strong stage presence.

Flick: Can play age 10. A classmate and best buddy of Ralphie’s; Flick is the guinea pig in the flagpole licking experiment. Able to sustain and communicate with a serious lisp.

Schwartz: Can play age 9-10. A classmate and best buddy of Ralphie; Schwartz becomes the scapegoat when Ralphie utters an unmentionable word.

Scut Farkus: Can play age 12/13. A textbook example of a schoolyard bully, loud, obnoxious and intimidating. This truant is a year or two older than Ralphie and his friends and wears a perpetual scowl under his coonskin cap.

Ensemble: All Ages. Plenty of fun ensemble roles available. A strong sense of musical theatre comedy is needed.
