INCLUSIVE CASTING
The creative team is committed to casting practices that advance diversity and inclusion. All ethnicities, genders, and abilities will be considered. Additionally, the genders listed in the breakdown below are specific to the pronouns used in the script, however the creative team may consider any gender identity for roles provided the performer can execute the vocal requirements.
Character Breakdown (ages are approximate)
Actors of all genders are encouraged to audition
Emcee – Gender nonconforming host at the Kit Kat Club. A magnetic and hypnotizing performer who can equally charm you and terrify you. Sexually fluid ringleader who runs the show at the Kit Kat Klub.
Sally Bowles 25-40– A British Cabaret performer and the headliner at Berlin’s Kit Kat Club. Sally is eccentric, compelling, vivacious, and outrageous – a true bohemian with an artist’s soul. Underneath the surface she is far more complicated than she appears.
Clifford Bradshaw 25-40. – An American novelist and English teacher traveling to Berlin for inspiration. Strong wit, charisma, presence, and depth.
Fräulein Schneider 55-75 – An older landlady who rents rooms in her large flat. She is alone and resigned to her place in life, but secretly longs for more. She is wise and worn but with real sparkle and humor. A survivor and a cynic. Loving Herr Schultz and choosing to risk getting engaged could cost her everything.
Herr Schultz 55-75. One of Fraulein Schneider’s roomers. A Jewish fruit shop owner who falls in love with Fraulein Schneider. He is warm, kind, endearing, and heartbreakingly “naïve”.
Fräulein Kost 30-40. Fräulein Kost is a survivor. A sex worker and lodger in Fraulein Schneider’s boarding house, she makes things work. Quick witted and sharp tongued, the winning side is her side and she’s ready to swap alliances for whatever grass is the greener.
Ernst Ludwig 20-40. Life and soul, dependable yet enigmatic, he takes English lessons from Cliff. He’s Cliff’s first ‘true’ friend upon arrival to Berlin. Everyone knows him, everyone loves him. He appears witty, charming, and warm but, ultimately, a Nazi.
Kit Kat Club Girls – Rosie, Lulu, Frenchi, Texas, Fritzie, Helga
Kit Kat Club Boys – Bobby, Victor, Hans, Herman –
Sexy, quirky, and outrageous, the singers and dancers in the Kit Kat Club. They may double other roles and perform in scenes outside of Club scenes, active through the show.
Ensemble – Patrons, party goers, customs official, Max, Rudy, sailor, gorilla, etc
This ensemble may double with the Kit Kat Club performers, but is up to director discretion.
